Paint Review: Lifecolor

I really wanted to like this paint. When I opened the Lifecolor jar I was hoping to smell the familiar ammonia of MM Acryl, but instead I noticed only a very faint alcohol smell.  The paint looked good in the bottle, but when I brushed it on, coverage was not too good. Combine that with brushmarks and low adhesion and you have a pretty bad paint for my methods. Your mileage may vary…

Summary

Poor coverage, brushmarks, low adhesion = bad paint.

    1. The same as Lifefcolor? None of them are exactly like it. It has some good qualities. You can draw a line with it, but it has all the other bad qualities of Model Color. It’s like a thin version of Model Color. You could paint with it by applying multiple coats. It would be fragile but since I don’t mask that wouldn’t matter too much. But the brushmark issue is a deal-killer, really.

  1. It has to be thinned and applied in several perhaps 5-6 coats to give proper coverage… Having done so I find it ok.

    1. I agree. That’s also the best way to achieve level coverage. It’s quite a unique paint and demands mindful patience and those many coats. However, the results can really be worth the extra time spent.

  2. I use Lifecolor for years and think it’s one of the best handbrush paint.

true that some “traditional” colors are of low coverage but other brands are all the same, like white, yellow, etc…
but as I am a shipbuilder, practically all of my paints are greys and blue-grey, which have good coverage.

my only complaint is that after some time, paint in bottle and on brush becomes somewhat grainy.

    1. just a precision : normally, with colors I use, 2 coats are truly good enough ! (but yellow and white need 5-6 coats… as a lot of other brands…)

      1. Several coats is not that bad. I’m probably judging this paint a bit harshly because it is just not as good as Pollyscale. But now that all the Olde Paintes that I loved and lost are truly gone, I’ll sit here and write a country song…
